What are sugar alcohols and why doesn’t The Volk Bar contain them?
Sugar alcohols (erythritol, maltitol, sorbitol) are sweeteners used in the majority of protein bars to keep sugar counts low. The problem? They’re osmotic laxatives that draw water into the intestine, causing bloating, gas, and cramping. They’re the number one reason consumers complain about protein bars. The Volk Bar uses monk fruit instead, eliminating this issue entirely.
Why use a pea and whey protein blend instead of just one?
The blend delivers the best of both worlds. Organic pea protein provides a strong plant-based protein base with a PDCAAS score of 0.89, while whey and milk protein in the ganache complete the amino acid profile particularly leucine, which is critical for muscle recovery. Together they create a complete protein source with superior digestibility.
What is monk fruit?
Monk fruit is a natural, zero-calorie sweetener derived from the luo han guo fruit. It provides sweetness without spiking blood sugar or causing the digestive discomfort associated with sugar alcohols. It’s approved by FSANZ (2018) and FDA (2014), and has no negative gut impact.
What are the prebiotics in The Volk Bar?
Each bar contains 5.1g of soluble fibre from tapioca (resistant dextrin), which acts as a prebiotic feeding beneficial gut bacteria and supporting digestive health. Unlike chicory inulin (used in many other bars), tapioca soluble fibre ferments slowly in the large intestine and doesn’t cause rapid gas production. It holds FDA GRAS status.
Is The Volk Bar vegan?
Sugar alcohols (maltitol, sorbitol, erythritol) are sweeteners in most protein bars. They’re the primary cause of bloating. We use monk fruit — natural, zero-calorie, no gut impact.
Does The Volk Bar contain any artificial sweeteners, colours, or flavours?
No. The Volk Bar contains zero artificial sweeteners, zero artificial colours, and zero artificial flavours. All flavours are derived from natural sources and are FSANZ-compliant. The chocolate comes from real cacao, and each flavour uses real ingredients: cherry paste, natural mint, real honeycomb pieces, coconut, and almonds.
Why is rice syrup in the ingredients?
Rice syrup is a structural ingredient. It holds the bar together and keeps it soft on the shelf. Without it (or sugar alcohols), protein bars harden within days. We chose rice syrup over sugar alcohols because it doesn’t cause gut distress, a deliberate trade-off for a better product and consumer experience. It’s not being used as a sweetener.
How much sugar is in each bar?
Between 5.4g and 5.9g per bar depending on the flavour. This sugar comes naturally from whole-food ingredients, not from added refined sugars like other brands that hide their true sugar content with label trickery.
Is The Volk Bar vegan?
No. All three flavours contain milk powder and whey protein in the ganache layer.
Is it vegetarian?
Choc Cherry and Choc Mint are vegetarian-friendly. Choc Honeycomb contains gelatine (in the honeycomb pieces) and is not suitable for vegetarian diets.
