To celebrate International Women’s Day, we’ve had the pleasure of sharing the inspiring journeys of inspiring women in our combat community throughout this week. To close out our series, we reached out to pro boxer Skye Nicolson for her insight into the world of martial arts from a female perspective at an elite level of the sport.

About Skye

Boxing is a massive part of my everyday life. I train 2-3 times a day, 6 days a week, so there isn’t a whole lot of time left to do much else! But I’m studying a Bachelor of Primary Education part-time at Griffith University and in my spare time I like to do things that make me feel good! Going to the beach, getting a massage or pedicure, that sort of thing! I also love going shopping and watching movies and TV shows.  

What got you into combat sports and what do you love about it?

I started boxing when I was 12! My brothers had always boxed and my family was always quite involved in boxing. No one really ever expected me to want to do it but I just fell in love with it and never looked back. 

Do you believe that training in combat sports is heavily male-dominated? How do you feel being a woman in the sport?

Yes, combat sports are definitely male dominated but it’s definitely growing in popularity amongst girls and women worldwide. It’s so empowering to see the growth of women in combat sports! 

Would you recommend combat sports for other women? Why or why not?

100%! Women should feel empowered and strong and combat sport supports this! It also helps build confidence that shines in all aspects of women’s lives. 

What advice would you give to other women who have reservations about trying combat sports?

Just try it out - there’s no harm in giving something new a go. Everyone is a beginner when they first start out, so don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed! Combat gyms are full of supportive and uplifting people that will help you reach your full potential.

What is some direct advice you could give men to help women become more comfortable training in combat sports?

Be welcoming and respectful so we can all flourish together.
